What will the session cover?

Students are using AI in growing numbers, often without clear guidance on what’s appropriate and what isn’t. This interactive session looks at the challenges of supporting students with AI use, drawing on sector research about how students are actually using these tools, why detection-focused approaches fall short, and how to open up honest conversations about appropriate use, acknowledgement and academic integrity. During this online CPD session, Becky Holman, Hannah Tarrant and Sally Cheng, Learning Designers at the University of Portsmouth, will talk about how students can best be supported in using AI sensibly. You’ll leave with up-to-date information, ideas and practical takeaways that you can take straight back into your own setting.

Who is the presenter of this session?

Becky Holman 

Becky Holman is a Learning Designer at the University of Portsmouth’s Centre for Academic and Digital Innovation (CADI), with seven years’ experience designing and developing digital learning resources for degree apprenticeships. She is passionate about using technology to create engaging, accessible learning experiences that support diverse learner needs.

Sally Cheng 

Sally Cheng has worked at the University of Portsmouth since 2001, holding roles in online course development, digital learning, and learning design. Throughout her career, she has supported staff across a wide range of disciplines to create accessible, engaging, and effective digital learning experiences.

Hannah Tarrant 

Hannah Tarrant is an experienced Learning Designer specialising in curriculum development and assessment design for Active Blended Learning. She also leads work on the TESTA (Transforming the Experience of Students through Assessment) framework, helping to enhance assessment and learning experiences across University of Portsmouth programmes.

Who is it for?

This session will be suitable for all staff working in an education setting, including those in SLT roles, pastoral roles, teaching and non-teaching staff. It will also be suitable for staff who work across the education sector, for example, those in higher education, Local Authority or charity roles that would like to further their knowledge.
